Reset home broadband connection

If the internet connection seems not to be working try the following in the order shown to resolve the situation. If you are feeling technical then start at either step 1 or step 2. If not then go straight to step 3.

1. Reset the Internet Connection from DOS

  1. Stop Internet Explorer (IE) if it is running.
  2. Start / run / cmd
  3. This will open up a (black) DOS command line window on the desktop.
  4. In the DOS window type the command "ipconfig/all" (without the quotes). Hit RETURN.
  5. This will display the IP configuration of the connection to the router. It may show obvious problems.
  6. In the DOS window type the command "ipconfig/release_all". Hit RETURN.
  7. Wait for the cursor to come back to the prompt in the DOS window.
  8. In the DOS window type the command "ipconfig/renew_all". Hit RETURN.
  9. Wait for the cursor to come back to the prompt in the DOS window.
  10. In the DOS window type the command "ipconfg/all" (same as earlier). Hit RETURN. Hopefully the problem is cured (compare the results with step 1 (e) above.
  11. Restart IE.
  12. Do you have an Internet connection?
  13. If YES that's it sorted. Finished.
  14. If NO goto 2.

2. Reset the Internet Connection from Windows

  1. Look for the network connection icon in the lower right hand corner of the task bar (two little PCs usually with screens blinking showing activity).
  2. Right click it to get its properties.
  3. From the drop-down list select Disable.
  4. The little green wireless transmitter icon also in the lower right hand corner of the task bar may go red at this point (indicating no wireless connection)
  5. Now in the Network connection icon from drop-down list select Enable.
  6. Hopefully little transmitter icon in the lower right hand corner of the task bar will go yellow or green at this point (indicating weak or strong wireless connection respectively)
  7. restart IE.
  8. Do you have an Internet connection?
  9. If YES that's it sorted. Finished.
  10. If NO goto 3.

3. Reset the PC (and hopefully the connection)

  1. Reboot the PC.
  2. Logon in again.
  3. Restart IE and/or any other applications that require internet access.
  4. If YES that's it sorted. Finished.
  5. If NO goto 4

4. Final option: restart the ADSL modem and router

  1. Goto to the bedroom where the modem and router are.
  2. At the red lighted switch on the plug-gang, switch off (the light goes out).
  3. Wait 15-20 secs.
  4. Switch back on again (red light comes on again).
  5. Return to PC. Wait 20-30 secs.
  6. Restart IE.
  7. Do you have an Internet connection?
  8. If YES that's it sorted. Finished.
  9. If NO then it's likely to be a problem at the ISP end of the connection.
  10. Wait an hour or two and try from step 3 again.
